Chinese Ambassador, Zhao Yanbo, met with Mrs. Haddijatou Jallow, Executive Chairperson of the Environment Protection Agency-Sierra Leone (EPA-SL) early this week at his Wilberforce Loop office.
In her remarks, Mrs. Jallow expressed her appreciation for China’s long-term and all-round support for the socio-economic development of Sierra Leone. She stated that Sierra Leone is the third most vulnerable country in the world in terms of climate change.
“Flood and drought caused by climate change have severe adverse impact on the national development of the country. EPA would very much like to keep close communication with China, learn from your advanced experience and technology to improve Sierra Leone’s capacity on environment protection.”
Ambassador Zhao said he was happy that the EPA boss met with him to discuss how they can come on board to help Sierra Leone in averting disasters from climate change. He indicated that environment protection is the common responsibility of the whole world.
“I can say Chinese and Sierra Leoneans attach great importance to this issue. As the biggest developing country, China has lots of experience and lessons drawn from its own environment protection endeavours.”
Ambassador Zhao promised that China was ready to share experience and strengthen bilateral cooperation with Sierra Leone in terms of capacity building and technology transfer with a view to improving its capability of environment protection, providing long-term support for the socio-economic progress of Sierra Leone.
They had an in-depth exchange of views on environment protection, climate change and other issues of shared interest. Mr. Wang Xinmin, Political Counselor of the Embassy and other senior officers from EPA-SL were also in attendance.
Mrs. Jallow thanked Ambassador Zhao for the opportunity to meet and discuss and said she looks forward to working with the Embassy in averting climate change problems in Sierra Leone.
